Publisher Faces Lawsuits after Printing Over the Copyrighted Amount Stated
Monday November 29, 2010 Photography CategoryA number of artist, photographers and photo agencies have filed copyright infringement claims after finding out their images were used more than they thought.
In most cases the required amount was supposed to be 40,000 copies but the publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt printed a million without notifying or paying compensation to their artists.
Though most cases are being paid to settle Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has now changed its licensing contract to say that “if you sign the agreement, any use in excess of the permission that you are granting will be extended, and that you automatically are granting us an extension of right if we need it.”
So when contributing your artwork, be sure to read the contracts carefully before signing.
