American Fashion Photographer

Beginnings

Steven Meisel attended High School of Art & Design and Parsons the New School for Design where he majored in Fashion Illustration. He started out illustrating and on his weekends photographed models and sent these pics to modeling agencies and magazines. He was quickly discovered after wards.

Career

Steven Meisel’s first job was working as an illustrator for fashion designer Halston, then as an Illustrator for WWD. He also taught illustration at Parons and quickly became a photographer for Seventeen magazine. He photographed every cover for 2 decades at American and Italian Vogue. He also photographed a number of singers such as Mariah Carey and Madonna for their album covers.

He was so sought after that he also shot campaigns for fashion houses Prada, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and close friend Anna Sui.

Today

Steven Meisel currently works for many different fashion magazines, including fashion bibles such as US and Italian Vogue, amongst others. For the latter he has been the only photographer for its cover for almost 15 years; but there’s a story behind this. His studio is located in New York at 64 Wooster Street but he often rents the studios at Pier59.
